Return to Halterburn!

Thanks to generous support from the Fallago Environment Fund and The Henfrey Charitable Trust, we are very pleased to announce that TillVAS will be making a long-awaited return to the Halterburn Valley near Kirk Yetholm in the beautiful Scottish Borders and the potential water-powered mill site that we discovered there in 2023.

With Richard Carlton of The Archaeological Practice on hand to guide and advise us, we will be on-site from Wednesday the 26th August until Tuesday 8th September. We hope to complete the excavation of the building, which pottery finds currently date to the 13^th-14^th century, and to try to characterise its purpose and period of use.

As well as our wonderful funders, we would also like to express our gratitude to the Roberton and Playfair-Hannay families and Abercorn Estates for granting permission to access and excavate on the site and giving us their help and support.

Bookings are now being taken for dig spaces and while priority will be given to TillVAS members, all are very welcome! If you are new to archaeology, we have equipment you can borrow and plenty of friendly people on site who would be only too happy to show you the ropes. We also plan to run some special activities during the course of the dig – so watch this space for details!
